Biographical information

James Newell is a creative professional freelance photographer based in Southampton Hampshire UK.

Born, raised and educated in Hampshire. Lived in Durley nr Southampton and then moving to Highfield Southampton. Attended Portswood Primary school and Hampton Park Secondary School in Swaythling Southampton. Studied Engineering at Southampton Technical College and then moved on to study Photography and Technical Illustration at Southampton College of Art. Photography has been a lifelong passion and James's father, George Newell was an accomplished amateur photographer and step grandfather Frank Newell based in Alresford Hampshire was Professional photographer who worked for amongst others Lord Tichborn.

Whilst at Southampton College of Art under the tutelage of lecturer and local photographer Terry Southwell based in Shirley, James developed a more intense interest in the art and technique of the creative process of photography. In order to pursue a career in photography James took a post as photographic technician at Roy Romsey "the county photographer" based at Stag gates Southampton and attended Salisbury College of Art to study Industrial & Commercial photography City and Guilds 744. This position provided great experience in Black & White printing & processing, Colour printing and processing, Art work production, Copy Work, Archiving of negatives and prints, Mounting and print finishing, Studio management and an in depth Knowledge of techniques and technical specification of lens and camera design and effective and creative application of photographic processes in wedding and portraiture as well as industrial & commercial photography.

A Move to Glasgow to work as press & marketing assistant for Scottish Opera/Theatre Royal further experience was gained not only in life with exposure to the excitement and hype of back stage and front of house life in a variety of performing arts, but also in the implementation and execution of marketing, press and PR objectives. Implementing and updating a system to archive and file Scottish opera’s slides, transparencies and prints.

Returning to the south of England a position as Photographer/ Darkroom Technician was taken with Bill Hammerton at Hythe Photographic services in Hythe in the New Forest. The spectrum of experience was further broadened in E6 Transparency processing, Audio Visual production, Art work production using a Horizontal rostrum camera, Portraiture, Wedding, Product, Public relation & promotional, Industrial and Commercial photography and Location Photography.

James embarked on his career as a freelance photographer based in Bitterne, Southampton. A short spell sub-contracting at IMB Hursley Nr Winchester and Chandlers ford provided another wealth of experience and producing another opportunity to further expertise in a state of the art, high tech corporate environment with exposure to high level corporate portraiture, drive in studio facilities and early eighties style budgets’ to produce high end creative promotional & advertising photography.

The John Hansard Gallery located in Southampton University one of Britain's leading galleries of contemporary art and photography under the curatorship of Barry Barker formally director and curator of the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol and the ICA in London provided another opportunity to gain experience and enjoy the atmosphere of the gallery environment., providing an inspiring opportunity with exposure to the world of visual Arts, with installations by artists such as Rebecca Horn and Helen Chadwick and Photographic exhibitions by  Boyd Webb, Joshua Thomas Cooper and Josef Koudelka, and a major retrospective of Julia Margret Cameron’s portraiture.

During the eighties & nineties James Newell Photography expanded with large studio facilities at Netley Marsh nr Totton Southampton. Mastering and gaining expertise in product photography, portrait photography, still life photography with creative lighting, multiple exposure, and large format techniques using 5x4 Mono rail cameras. Clients included; Local Graphic Agenises, Graphics Ad Lib, Pebble Graphics, Culley & Stone, Franklin Lloyd Culley & Stone, Tony Fast Design. Local Companies: Winchester based Response Company producing: product, promotional, brochure, and corporate portraiture, Hampshire County Council producing; press, promotional, PR, and corporate photography, Southampton Advertiser, Due South the Southampton and local area listings magazine, National and international companies; KPMG, Set Masters, Multikwik, Navada, Radio Active, Virgin Atlantic, Opticom, and many more. A long term relationship with John Gillett at the Winchester Gallery developed producing high quality B&W and Colour medium and large format images of art works and instillations for use to promote art in public places, gallery shows and exhibitions, local & national contemporary art, artists and craft.

Due to the digital age it has not been necessary or cost effective to run a dark room. Almost all work is now produced in a digital format, with hard copy prints or digital albums and photo books produced to client demands. A great proportion of work is sent straight to the clients either via FTP, Email or DVD. Far more time is now spent in front of a computer than in the dark room.
